This is pretty cool. I want one!
If you are in Auckland and craving a great breakfast/brunch – then you need to make a beeline to ‘Dear Jervois’ in Herne Bay. I do realise that I should stop declaring various things as “the best _____ ever”, but seriously, this was an incredible omelette.
When I researched a good cafe to try for our last brunch in Auckland, ‘Dear Jervois’ appeared quite a few times.
Located in Herne Bay, ‘Dear Jervois’ appears on quite a number of top cafes lists. We’ve been leaning heavily on The Urban List during this trip to provide some good recommendations, and when I was reading over their menu I knew this was the place we were eating.
Interesting tid-bit, Herne Bay has quite a few interesting boutique stores on Jervois Rd which you can check out after having your yum cafe meal.
The interior is quite nice, and a number of yum baked goods towers next to the till.
The menu had a wide array of options (sorry for the lack of font clarity – if you want you can read their menu online HERE);
Omelette, with bacon, crispy shallots, fresh thyme, smoked cheddar & Aioli ($21.00)
This omelette is the best omelette I’ve ever eaten (and has been mentioned as ‘the best in Auckland’). They have different variants which include a salmon or a veggie option, but the reason I picked this was because of all the amazing photos on instagram. I couldn’t scroll more than a handful of images without seeing this beauty. This is the perfect combination of egg, cheese, bacon, and aioli. The Aioli was very subtle and actually complemented the dish perfectly. If you are in Auckland, please visit Dear Jervois just to have this bad boy.
Poke Bowl with sashimi grade salmon; avocado, spring onion, seaweed, pickled ginger & sesame seeds on black quinoa rice ($22.00)
My wife totally loved her Poke Bowl. Little did we know but ‘Poke Bowls’ seem to be all the rage in Auckland at the moment – having spotted them a number of times throughout the city.
Side of Fries ($7.00)
These fries were amazing. Piping hot, crispy, and with a great aioli for dipping. The one thing I do remember thinking was – wow, what a generous portion for a side dish. I’m not normally a fan of the fryer-basket display, but in this case it was big enough that the two of us nearly didn’t finish it.
Large Cappuccino ($5.50)
The coffee was really good. I try to have a cappuccino where ever I have breakfast. The large was served in a big cup (nearly a bowl). Yum!
– Best Omelette I’ve had, and I’ll endorse it’s title of “best omelette in Auckland”.
– Excellent Coffee
– Music selection was well appreciated.
– Didn’t get to try any of their yummy baked goods 😦
– Kimchi Fried Rice wasn’t available.
I’m very glad that this was our last brunch/lunch in Auckland. Talk about ending the trip on a high-note. The total bill came to $64.00 – which was pretty in keeping with the rest of the meals on our trip. If you do check out Dear Jervois based on this review – please write a comment below and let me know what you thought of it!

I said this the other night – and this exact image popped into my head.
