I always rehearse what I’m going to say, even to the cashier. The words start repeating over and over in my head at a rapid pace as the line moves up and then it’s my turn. Sometimes I’ve been too anxiety ridden to actually say what I want to say (“Hi, how are you today?”) and instead just manage to choke out a faint “hi”. 😦

I know what you mean. There have been times where I do this, manage to succeed in the interaction and then stand there like an idiot without realising I’ve forgotten to get my wallet out and pay for my purchase. It’s like half-successful.

Me too. It’s like my brain function gets slower after the spike of anxiety I feel once I get the verbal interaction over with. I can barely hear the cashier when I’m told my total payment amount and just simply hand in whatever bill is enough. I get so hung up on this stuff though. If my pay amount is $5.06, giving in a $10 makes me feel like an asshole bc I could’ve just given a $5 bill and 6 cents but I didn’t want to provoke my anxiety if I had to stand there fumbling through my wallet for everything while the cashier looks at me. And if I do the opposite and pay in exact bill and coins, I feel like I’m holding up the line by taking a few seconds longer to do this.

Well it’s tough in the states because you get told the tax after the staff ring up the item…. so it’s not like you can pre-count your coins. Here in Australia they’ve standardised all our goods/services tax to be 10%, which then has to be included on the displayed pricing (so an item selling for $5.15 includes the 10% already… so you can count the 15c in coins…) I don’t think you’re an asshole bc you paid with a $10 note. Here we have a lot of PayPass payments, so it’s common to just tap your card onto pay terminals to make payments… the problem is, when you get to places that are cash only and you have no cash you stand there like a dumbass looking pathetic.
